John Shilko, Sr. was recently awarded Brown Engineering's Spirit of Excellence Award. Shilko, a Senior Technical Assistant, was presented with the award by Dean Larry Larson, and Director of Finance and Operations Nancy Carroll at the annual summer cookout for the School of Engineering.
The Spirit of Excellence Award was created in 2015 to be given annually to an employee who brings new and innovative ways to doing their work, and embraces the vision of the School of Engineering through his or her accomplishments during the previous academic year.
Shilko demonstrated dedication and outstanding assistance to the students and faculty of Engineering in his unflinching desire to help. This desire was exemplified in a difficult and demanding lab course (ENGN 1480) with a record number of students enrolled. The course ran flawlessly, in large part due to Shilko, who was in his first semester of employment at Brown.
"John went above and beyond expectations," said Professor Sharvan Kumar, who nominated Shilko for the award. "He attended faculty lectures, got the labs ready ahead of time, and spent many hours of the week working with students and running the lab."
