Brown Corporation Accepts More than $63 Million in New Gifts, including $10 Million for Engineering

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — At its Saturday morning business session during its winter meeting, the Corporation of Brown University formally accepted gifts to the University totaling more than $63 million, including $10 for the School of Engineering. It also approved the appointment of five faculty members to named chairs, including one for the School of Engineering.

New Gifts to the University
At its business meeting on February 7, the Corporation accepted or ratified acceptance of 13 new gifts totaling more than $63 million. These include a pledge from anonymous donors of $20 million, of which $10 million will support the School of Engineering. The School of Engineering gratefully acknowledges this gift, which will be used to continue the ambitious growth of the School in the coming years.

Professorships
The Corporation also approved the appointment of five faculty members to named chairs, including one for the School of Engineering. Professor Eric Suuberg has been named the C.V. Starr Professor of Technology Entrepreneurship.

Professor Suuberg has been at Brown since 1981, when he was one of the founding members of Brown's Chemical Engineering program. His research interests have been in the areas of energy and environmental engineering. He has served as Associate Dean of the Faculty (2002-2005), as Chair of the Psychology Department (2004-5), and as Associate Dean of the School of Engineering (2011-13). He is currently Co-Director of the Superfund Basic Research Program, and a co-founder of the COE (now BEO) concentration as well as a co-founder of the master's Program in Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship (PRIME). He is a principal editor of the journal Fuel.
