Brown Team Selected for National Entrepreneurship Competition

HMSHMSolution is one of 17 teams that has been selected to participate in the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA) Open Minds exhibition at the Tech Museum of Innovation in Silicon Valley on March 22 in San Jose, California. Margaret Lengerich, who received her master's degree in Brown's Program in Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship (PRIME) in 2013, is the founder and CEO of HMSolution. She will be exhibiting on behalf of HMSolution at Open Minds.

Open Minds is the acclaimed annual exhibition of cutting-edge innovation from NCIIA's best student teams which have been selected as part of a national competition. The exhibition takes place each year during NCIIA's annual conference, and is an opportunity for student teams to demonstrate their products to the public, many of them for the first time. Winning teams receive an all-expense-paid trip to NCIIA's annual conference to present their innovations to experts and the general public, and have a chance to win cash prizes to further their venture.

HMSolution is developing an iron-based water filtration system to remove arsenic and other heavy metals from groundwater, for homeowners who rely on private wells as a source of drinking water. HMSolution will target residential customers as its initial market in order to yield the most immediate revenue and validate its technology. Households are consuming hazardous water because current water filtration systems are too expensive to purchase and/or operate and require frequent maintenance that is not always followed. HMSolution solves this problem through its water filtration system that is easy and inexpensive to install, operate and maintain, does not require addition of chemicals, and costs a quarter of comparable filtration systems. These competitive advantages are possible due to the novel design of the system that results in constant in-situ generation of filtering media. HM Solution was recently accepted into Stage 2 of the E-Team program.
