James Rice Sc.M. '08 Ph.D. '11, a postdoctoral research associate and engineering state agencies liaison with the Brown University Superfund Research Program (SRP) Research Translation Core and with Brown SRP Investigator Eric Suuberg, is one of five recipients of the 2013 K.C. Donnelly Externship award.
Rice is conducting a research externship at the Fisherville Mill Brownfield site in Grafton, Mass., under the guidance of Robert Burgess, Ph.D., a staff scientist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Rice is leading a passive sampler study in the Blackstone River at the Fisherville Mill site to monitor contamination of heating oil containing petroleum hydrocarbons and other potential pollutants. The passive sampling devices can be effective at monitoring contaminant concentrations in water columns and sediment interstitial waters and produce information on dissolved and bioavailable concentrations of contaminants. Rice is deploying, collecting, and analyzing contaminants at the Fisherville Mill site.

"It will also be my first opportunity to partner with and conduct research at a government laboratory, providing me with experience connecting academic research to government and professional practice."
About the K.C. Donnelly Externship Award Supplement
The Superfund Research Program (SRP) has established an honorary award in memory of Dr. K.C. Donnelly, a longtime SRP grantee who worked tirelessly to improve our understanding of environmental exposure and genotoxicity of complex chemical mixtures. Dr. Donnelly passed away on July 1, 2009. He was a dedicated mentor to his students and post-doctoral researchers, instilling in them the importance of applying their knowledge and findings to improve the health of communities exposed to environmental contaminants.
