Primary Typefaces
Brown University has multiple typeface options available for use through the University’s enterprise license with Adobe Creative Cloud: Minion Pro, Freight Sans, Source Sans Pro and Area Normal. Each typeface also has a substitute typeface called a Universal Alternative Font (or System Font) that can be used when Brown’s Adobe typefaces are not available. Universal Alternative Fonts are installed on most operating systems and devices and will display correctly across a range of computers, smartphones and tablets.
Minion Pro is the University’s primary serif typeface and is featured in the University logo. Serif typefaces feature “feet” or flourishes at the ends of each character, whereas sans serif typefaces do not. Minion Pro is typically used in body copy. Georgia may be used as an alternative when Minion Pro is not available.
Freight Sans and Source Sans Pro are the University’s primary sans serif typefaces. These typefaces are typically used in headings, apps, signage and advertising. Arial or Open Sans may be used as an alternative when Freight Sans and/or Source Sans Pro are not available.
Area Normal is typically used for social media applications. Arial or Plus Jakarta Sans may be used as an alternative when Area Normal is not available.
Font Licensing
Brown University has a University-wide license for Adobe Creative Cloud that is available to all faculty, staff members and students with a brown.edu email address. All of the University’s primary typefaces (Minion Pro, Freight Sans, Source Sans Pro and Area Normal) are available through Adobe Fonts on Creative Cloud — along with many other typeface options.
