Brown University's School of Engineering and Cognizant have launched a research collaboration examining how artificial intelligence could support innovation across life sciences and biotechnology. Supported by an industry grant, the initiative brings together academic research and commercial expertise to address pressing challenges in therapy development, manufacturing, and delivery.
The effort is led at Brown by Professor Anubhav Tripathi, whose lab works at the intersection of life sciences and diagnostics technologies. “The hard problems in life sciences are no longer only biological, they are problems of speed, scale and decision-making,” he said. “Working alongside Cognizant lets us test ideas against real-world considerations involved in developing and delivering therapies.”
Scope and priorities will be informed by industry needs and framed across four life sciences value areas: pipeline cycle time reduction, supporting discovery, development, clinical trials, approvals and therapy delivery; intelligent manufacturing and supply chain resilience, using physical AI, digital twins and increasingly automated operations to improve reliability and speed-to-market; patient engagement and outcomes, supporting patient identification, recruitment, outreach and treatment pathways for targeted populations; and enterprise AI enablement, supporting broader adoption across R&D, manufacturing, quality, compliance and operations.
Throughout the collaboration, researchers from Brown and Cognizant will collaborate on joint fundamental research publications, share ongoing findings, and produce a final synthesis report. The organizations are also exploring events aimed at fostering collaboration among scientists, researchers, and healthcare leaders across Rhode Island and beyond.
