Kim chosen Rising Star in Mechanical Engineering

Brown School of Engineering Hibbitt Postdoctoral Fellow Jiwon Kim was selected for the 2025 Rising Stars in Mechanical Engineering Workshop, held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology October 23 and 24.

The Rising Stars workshop is an academic career workshop that invites 30 leading female postdoctoral researchers or graduate students from around the United States to develop their career skills, connect with a cohort of peers, and engage with mentors in anticipation of future careers in academia. The workshop is hosted on a rotating basis between the mechanical engineering departments of Stanford University, the University of California Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon University, and MIT.

Kim is currently a postdoctoral research associate in Associate Professor Ian Wong’s group at the Brown University School of Engineering. Kim’s scientific interests are directed at how cells sense and generate mechanical forces in the context of their physical microenvironment. In particular, she investigates how groups of cells coordinate their migration to orbit or invade in response to matrix architecture.

Kim previously received her Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
