Several Brown University engineering students attended the 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Annual Student Conference in late October in Pittsburgh. Four students presented research at the undergraduate poster competition, and Amanda Morel '19 returned to Providence with a third place award in her category. This year's Brown AIChE students that attended the national meeting included: Sara Berhane '19, Hannah Lam '19, Morel, and Maria Jesus Perez Ramirez '19.
"All four posters were incredible," said faculty advisor Indrek Kulaots. "All four students represented the School of Engineering and Brown in the best way in the national competition."
Approximately 400 posters were presented, and the competition was divided into nine different topic areas.
Morel (chemical and biochemical engineering) presented in the category of Catalysis and Reaction Engineering, and her project was entitled, "Selective Methane Activation through Electrotuned Catalysis on Cu2O." She won third place out of 45 posters, and was advised by Associate Professor Andrew Peterson.
Berhane (chemical and biochemical engineering) presented her project on "Thermal Exfoliation as a Solution for Creating Large Surface Area and High Porosity Graphite Oxide Films" in the category of Materials Engineering and Sciences. Robert Hurt and Indrek Kulaots served as her faculty advisors.
Lam (chemical and biochemical engineering) presented her project on "Oxidative Degradation of Nanocellulose Materials to Test Biopersistence in the Lung" in the category of Materials Engineering and Sciences. She worked with Professor Robert Hurt.
Perez Ramirez (chemical and biochemical engineering) presented her project on "Solid-Liquid-Solid Ion Exchange in the Synthesis of Perovskite Crystals" in the category of Materials Engineering and Sciences. She was advised by Assistant Professor of Chemistry Ou Chen.
