Elizabeth Gurin ’16 presents research at The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society Annual Meeting

Elizabeth Gurin '16, a materials science and engineering concentrator, presented her research work at The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society Annual Meeting on February 17 in Nashville, Tennessee.

Her presentation titled "Monotonic and Cyclic Response of Austenitic and Martensitic NiTi wires for Medical Device Applications" discussed the possible effects of the austenite-to-martensite phase transformation in NiTiNOL wires on the life of medical stents.

Gurin is advised by Professor Sharvan Kumar and has been working in his lab since the summer of 2014 with support from the Brown-Medtronic partnership. The work she presented constitutes part of her senior honors thesis.

"This is a substantial accomplishment," said Kumar. "Elizabeth has put considerable time and effort into this work and her sustained dedication to the project is commendable. Along the way, she has gained experience and knowledge on how to conduct scientific research, compare her work to those of others in the field by reading several papers, analyze results, and present them to an audience."

Gurin has also been an active student leader, serving as co-president of the Materials Research Society chapter at Brown in 2015.
