After more than six months of designing, planning, and testing, the Brown School of Engineering is pleased to unveil its new Drupal-based website (http://www.brown.edu/academics/engineering).
The key differences between the new and old sites are apparent right on the front page. Regular visitors to the site will notice that the new site is much more visually appealing. A main feature story with a large picture and four smaller pictures replaced the old listing of four stories with no pictures.
Gateways have now changed at the top of the page to feature engineering specific content for each audience (prospective students, current students, faculty & staff, alumni), and an Engineering A-Z index has been added. In addition, search functions were enhanced so that the user is now able to search the Brown and SOE websites.
The calendar was upgraded and allows for more information to be displayed for seminars and featured events.
An announcements section was added to highlight special events. A Tradition of Excellence section highlights some of the key features of the School. In addition, several new pages were added, and many others were improved.
In the footer, there are links to all of engineering's social media pages along with a new 'Give Now' button, making it easier than ever for users to support the School of Engineering.
Overall, the goal was to simplify navigation with no more than three clicks to get to anything. On the old site, there was some outdated information in a few places and that was removed or updated.
The new site is stylistically similar to the main www.brown.edu site, conforming to the basic BrownSites model , but adding enhancements. The School of Engineering continues to be a leader on campus in this regard.
Faculty, staff, and students from the School of Engineering, Public Affairs and University Relations, and Computing and Information Services have all worked together to update content, improve the functionality and design of the site, test the navigation, and make the look and feel of the site more pleasing.
