Summer Transition Engineering Program (STEP)

STEP program The Brown Summer Transition Engineering Program (STEP) is an empowering, hybrid undergraduate pre-orientation program designed to foster inclusion, community, and inspiration needed to thrive in engineering.

  • STEP students learn more about engineering, with an emphasis on community and team building.
  • Students additionally engage with the various support resources available across the University and the School of Engineering.
  • No prior engineering experience is required.
  • Students will engage in technical exercises and community building events.
  • All incoming undergraduates who are considering pursuing engineering as a concentration are eligible to apply for STEP.

The online portion of the program will take place July 7 - August 15, followed by the on-campus residency from August 18 - 22, before the semester officially starts. Students admitted to STEP are expected to participate in both the online and in-person programs. During the residency, STEP students will engage in specialized engineering cohort-building activities on campus that build upon aspects of the online program.

Please note that students without a family contribution in their financial aid package may qualify for support with travel to Brown should you be selected for STEP (with a move-in date of August 18th), depending on how far you might need to travel to get to campus. Should you be selected for the program, we will work with the financial aid office on booking travel, so please hold off on booking your travel until we are further along in the process.
