Fariha named 2024 STAT Wunderkind

Ramisa Fariha Sc.M. ’20, Ph.D. ’24, has been named to the 2024 STAT Wunderkind list. Fariha was selected from hundreds of nominations for her innovative research, as STAT News celebrates early-career researchers who are not yet independent scientists or program leaders.

STAT is an American health-oriented news website launched in 2015, by John W. Henry, the owner of the Boston Globe. It is produced by Boston Globe Media, and each year selects unheralded heroes of science and medicine from across North America in search for the next generation of scientific superstars.

Fariha earned her biomedical engineering Ph.D. last May, working in the Tripathi Lab with a focus on tier-2 diagnostics She developed technologies for immediate clinical applications, and her dissertation addressed challenges involved with sample preparation, transport, accessibility and cost.

Now as a postdoctoral researcher for Professor Juan Alfonzo in the Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry department, she leads the mass spectrometry-related studies in Brown’s newly formed RNA center. Her diverse research background includes stem cell engineering, tissue engineering, three-dimensional microtissues, optics, mass spectrometry and recently, tRNA modification.

Outside of the lab and throughout her graduate studies, Fariha has mentored several younger students via the Society of Women Engineers and through GirlUp Bangladesh. She also serves on the Society of Laboratory and Automation’s “Early Career” and “Knowledge and Content Delivery” Committees, helping create an impact on minorities in STEM and the scientific community at large.
